Hey ya’ll – anyone else have a suddenly heavy week? This has been such a great week, and then we got the news that something could be very wrong with a relative’s unborn baby. And a few other relatives are having various medical problems, most of which could be pretty serious.
We just learned about prayer on Sunday, and covered it in a Bible Study with friends, and my devotional booklet has been dwelling on it, as well. I think God wants us to pray. Actually, I know he does, and I’ve been sensing his Spirit nudging me to pray more over the past few months. I struggle with knowing how to pray – you know what I mean? Some days it seems so simple and easy. Other days, most days, it feels like being presented with a polynomial equation and giving your teacher that blank stare of “What is this? What am I supposed to do??” And now all of this has started to pop up. It isn’t that I believe God purposely decided to strike various family members so I would learn how to pray more (and better.) He is all-knowing, and He has known this was coming, and He knows of the other storms that will come. And He knows I need this skill. I could really wax eloquent on this subject, and I never meant to write all this here. But this is where we are right now, and where you all may be or will be in the future. So this weekend, besides the practical housewifery stuff, and the nerdy stuff, here’s some encouragement for those heavy times.
Benadryl for Upset Tummies (and motion sickness) ~ Prima came down with the stomach flu on Wednesday. The poor baby couldn’t keep a thing down, but kept wanting food. And it would come right back up, until all that was left was the bile. We decided to give the on-call nurse a ring to see if she had any suggestions. She told us to get some children’s Benadryl, and Pedialyte, and give the smallest possible doses to her. I had never heard of Benadryl for upset tummies (I can vividly recall some times when our entire family was sick growing up, and this would have been good to know!) But yes, it really does work, generally – Prima didn’t throw up anything after taking it, and was able to go to sleep shortly thereafter. Please, please note that you should not try this without checking with your doctor first!
Free audiobooks for this summer! ~ There is a program from May 5 – August 17 by SYNC that lets you have access to 30 free audiobooks in the summertime. The purpose is to encourage your teens to read while school is out, but anyone can access them. Head over to the link for more details and how to sign up.
How to get your apartment off-grid (with solar power) ~ If you are at all interested in solar power and/or going off-grid, but think that is only for rich people or people in single family homes…think again! A very detailed article on how to find and set up solar panels in your apartment. It points out that it is not necessarily more sustainable energy, so this is not a perfect solution. But I think it is a great starting point.
You can’t handle motherhood – or life ~ The fourth point of this article “10 Things You Should Know About Motherhood” echoes something our pastor talked about on Sunday evening, wrapping up a two-part sermon series on prayer. He stated that it is actually untrue that God will not give us more than we can handle. No, 1 Corinthians 10:13 He promises to give us a way to handle all that life brings us. He will routinely give us more than we can handle, but if we rely on His strength, we will be able to bear it. Besides this point, the other points are equally convicting, encouraging, and uplifting for myself as a mama. Which reminds me…
“God places each storm in our lives for our sanctification.” ~ Yet another article I read on motherhood this week, and equally beautiful.
Trusting Jesus, whatever comes our way. This is a lesson I am hoping to internalize more and more in the coming weeks. Even if it is so, so difficult. Dr. Charles Stanley pointed out in my devotional book: “The more we understand who He is, the better we will be able to trust Him.” This means more than usual Bible reading and prayer for me in the near future.
I realize that this may be a really overused song in Christian circles, and others may really dislike this song and/or Laura Story. But, God actually used this song to remind me of His goodness and His sovereignty in my life during a difficult time. It always helps me remember.
