Hello again friends! February has been a crazy hard month – for us and for many of you. It seems that sickness is just running rampant, and that so many friends are dealing with loss of a family member or a difficult diagnoses. We have both – Prima is sick for the second time in a row but third or fourth time this year, the Norseman is now sick, and we lost sweet Judah this past weekend.
I love that the Powersheets for this year (the dated one-year version) has the Spring reset before the month of March. I desperately need to come up, gulp fresh air, and pause before launching into spring. This week, as we celebrate Judah’s life and mourn his passing, I will also be working on this refresh along with my March goals. It is the perfect week to pause, reflect, and reassess what matters most in this season. It is also the beginning of the last full quarter before Baby Secundus arrives – which means considering what we need to do in preparation. The arrival of this baby is going to be so bittersweet. How do you rejoice well in the blessing that God’s grace has given you while remembering the losses that His grace has also allowed in recent months? I’m not entirely certain. I hope to find out in the months ahead.
So what did February look like?
- Prayer/Consisitent Bible Reading/Journaling – I’ve learned a lot by simply praying this month. I pray with Prima before bed; for healing, a good night’s sleep, future character and salvation, and for the Norseman and I to know better how to love, teach, and discipline her. I’ve been pausing mentally to pray for needs that arise, for wisdom as a parent and spouse, and for grace in daily life. //I started out reading the book of Hosea with the plan to read through the minor prophets. However, based on some suggestions from mentors I began reading through Ephesians, a chapter a day, over and over. I’m learning about grace, love, and reliance on the strength of Christ. I’m not sure what I will do for March yet. // I began more consistent journaling the last two weeks of February. The result is a clearer perspective spiritually, emotionally, and day to day. Continued cultivation is the key.
- Live a healthier lifestyle – I planned to do yoga two times a week. I did it exactly zero times! I am considering using one of those apps that pays you when you workout but charges you when you don’t! Although I am not sure that motivation is a problem. Finding the time, or rather, making the time for it (making it a priority!) is where I am challenged.
- Grow in intimacy and communication in marriage – This is happening little by little! We are scheduling “just us” dates once a month and those have been so much fun! Also, Sheila Gregoire at To Love, Honor, and Vacuum has been an excellent resource. Please check her out!
- Learn more mothering skills for this season – I did research on discipline methods this month. I listened to several podcasts by Risen Motherhood and God Centered Mom. I searched for articles on The Gospel Coalition website. I have a couple of books I would like to read still. See them here and here.
- Get back to daily music practice – I set a goal to practice three times a week. I practiced about three times total. Prima likes to sit with me and “practice” on her own. This makes practicing difficult! I need to find a different time to do my practicing.
- Be intentional and initiating in friendships – This one was fun! I did some Skype dates, dinners with friends, play dates, etc. This is a little outside of my comfort zone, but oh is it worth it! I wanted to send out cards, but that did not happen.
- Cultivate a life-giving, encouraging home – We got a big project done: decluttering and reorganizing the linen closet and under the bathroom sink. I forgot to take the unused toiletries out with the donation bags (oops!) but all in all that space is much nicer now. We have begun looking into slowly converting to a mostly Zero Waste home. We love that this is in line with our desire to wisely steward our resources as well as living simply.
- Become debt-free! – I worked on updating the budget regularly so that we were better able to stay within our planned amounts for our categories. We did really well this month! So far we are still on track for March 2018!
