We’re doing the January Whole30 challenge, starting today, January 4th. We waited to start so that we could celebrate our anniversary yesterday. There is a new Peruvian restaurant in town and we wanted to be able to enjoy whatever we chose guilt-free.
Today I’ll show you how I’m setting up our meal plan for the January Whole30 so that we don’t have to eat too much differently, and so that it is within, or close to, our monthly grocery budget of $330. I will note that we purchased ½ of a pastured hog from our local dairy/hog farm. The per pound cost of the pork that we eat this month will be factored into the totals for this month to give you a clear picture of what we spent.
Here’s the January Meal Plan. Keeping it simple, I planned the same type of food on the same day each week. This is based closely on the types of meals we already eat during the month. I considered the time of year and what is in season. Afterwards, I looked at some recipes that I might want to try. I penned in the names of a few recipes, and made a note of where they come from (mainly the soups, which will come from this post, adapted to be Whole30 compliant.)
- Mondays: taco bowls
- Tuesdays: leftovers or eat out Whole30 compliant meals
- Wednesdays: soup & salad,(or greens/veggies in the soup)
- Thursdays: fish
- Fridays: Sheet pan dinners
- Saturdays: Curries and/or stir-fries
- Sundays: Crockpot meals (Roast or whole chicken w/veggies)
After the main planning was done, I noted the types of food we are most likely eat throughout the month based on the meal plan.
- Avocados are in season and are a great Whole30 food – there will be a lot of them this month.
- Greens, root vegetables, and winter squash will also feature heavily, along with whatever meats are on sale at Earth Fare.
- We will have sausage in a sheet pan meal once a week, too. If that is too costly, I will switch it out for chicken thighs or shredded meat leftover from Sunday. I read on the Whole 9 forums that Earth Fare has a 2.99/lb sale on boneless chicken breasts later in January; I am keeping that in mind and considering whether I will stock up on them, or just stick with thighs (which we prefer for taste and cost per pound anyway.)
- Eggs: We do eat a lot of eggs, but I will not need to purchase any this month. I bought 15 dozen last month when the 18-ct cartons were on sale at Kroger for $0.99/a carton (so 10 cartons.) We have about 9 dozen left. I will be using them for filler protein instead of beans or rice.
- Both of our children eat yogurt almost every day, and my daughter drinks milk daily. Dairy-free milk and probiotics are so expensive that we will not be switching her off of dairy for this month.
What will be missing from our normal diet: rice, lentils, chickpeas, black beans, milk, yogurt, butter, bread, oatmeal, cheese, and chocolate. Dairy and beans will be the biggest switch for us. We’ve had so much sugar during the Christmas holiday that neither the Norseman or I are sad about cutting it back out. We normally have it about once a week. We’ve been eating sweets every day and can really feel it.
Week 1 Menu
Suppers (Note how I’ve easily switched meals around already to accomodate the changes in our week. It’s taken me some time, but I’ve got the beginnings of a very simple, routine meal plan going.)
- Monday –

- Tuesday – dumplings (Chinese-style, from the freezer – we love these so much, they had to be eaten before we started the challenge.)
- Wednesday – Sausage,Potatoes, and maybe green beans over a campfire (brrrr!!)
- Thursday – Salmon with root vegetables and asparagus
- Friday – taco bowls
- Saturday – Curry w/ sweet potatoes
- Sunday – chicken or pork roast in crockpot with root veggies
Eggs, fruit, banana smoothies for Prima (recipe coming next week), potatoes
Leftovers, potatoes, random plates or soups using up bits of whatever is leftover
